From the get-go the coalition SDP-NLP has stirred discussions and grievances. After the confusion of the government rotation, the time comes for the next elections to be “merchandise” in a barter. And, on the election market, there is a lot to share and offer “under the table”.
Romania has four electoral events this year: the local election, the parliamentary elections, the European and presidential elections (two rounds).
In their quest for consolidated elections the liberals have thrust Nicolae Ciucă at the forefront of the negotiations with the SDP. And Klaus Iohannis gave the first green light on the subject, stating that “the discussion is legitimate”.
Eugen Teodorovici, permanent guest of the show “Political Journal”, aired every Friday on Canal 33, complained about the “unfair game” of the parties, because they changed the rules along the way: “Ciolacu considers us jackasses! It is an attack on the opposition parties!”, says the politician about the consolidated elections.
The former minister also pointed out that these synchronized elections are political calculations, as last year’s budget was built “off the cuff”; if there had been a problem with the election funds, this consolidation would have been proposed at that very moment.
Another contentious point revolves around the agenda behind the presidential elections. Eugen Teodorovici believes that Ciolacu will attempt to dodge the presidential elections: “As he’s made himself known, Ciolacu will likely try to shift the presidential candidate elsewhere, not within the SDP, to avoid being accused by the party of the loss”.
If the NLP supports Geoană, the SDP will go with Ciolacu and in this confrontation Geoană stands to win.
The former finance minister is convinced that in the scenario in which Mircea Geoană is supported by the liberals, the current PM will lose: “NLP either stays with the SDP, or supports Geoană, which gives them a great opportunity to make it to the final. Between Ciolacu and Geoană supported by the NLP, I guarantee that Geoană has greater chances… Indeed, of all the names that came forward, Geoană is ok. Geoană is to win with a capable premier”.
